News from St. James of Jerusalem

Epiphany Day
January 6 -- “Chalking the door” is a centuries-old way to celebrate and to (literally) mark the occasion of the Epiphany with God’s blessing of our lives and homes with sacred signs and symbols. These markings set our homes and churches apart as places of Christian hospitality, as safe and peaceful outposts of the Kingdom of God in the world, as habitations of healing and rest. We again invite God’s presence into our churches and homes and ask His blessing upon all those who live, work, or visit throughout the coming year.

Michael comes to St. James from within the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, which includes Nassau and Suffolk Counties as well as Brooklyn and Queens. At the Diocese, based in Garden City, N.Y., Fr. Michael most recently served as Chaplain to the Right Reverend Lawrence C. Provenzano, Bishop of Long Island.  He served the Diocese for the past 10 years as Canon Liturgist.

In 2014, Fr. Michael received a call to be come the Pastoral Associate at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City and eventually as the Vicar of the Cathedral Congregation. His duties included overseeing the liturgical ministers, Cathedral Council, Stewardship Committee, Seasonal Environment, and the formation of a Pastoral Care Team.

Fr. Delaney was ordained in 1998 and has previously served at St. Peter’s Church in Washington, N.J., The Church of Saint Andrew in Staten Island, and as Interim Dean of Trinity/St. Philips Cathedral in Newark, NJ.  He also served as Director of Pastoral Care at Christ Episcopal Hospital in Jersey City, N.J., and as Director of Music at St. Paul’s Church in Paterson, N.J. In 1986, Fr. Michael, then, Br. Michael, professed final vows as an Augustinian Monk. Even though he left the Roman Catholic Church, over the years he has remained faithful to living into the spirituality of St. Augustine of Hippo.

Asked about his liturgical style, Fr. Michael said, “Hospitality is at the center of my liturgical style… it is one of warmth and gentleness, inclusive and dignified.” As an accomplished musician, music is also a very important part of Father Delaney’s ministry.

St. James of Jerusalem in Long Beach, NY, was founded in 1880 and moved to its current church once it was built in 1938. St. James is a warm and welcoming congregation dedicated to welcoming everyone. The congregation of St. James is excited to begin a new chapter under the inspired leadership of Fr. Michael Delaney.
